Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2024 week 13

photos taken March 30th 2024 of a cream-colored hellebore flower and very red tulips.

The very red tulips are here, poking up out of the leaf mulch and opening wide in the sun.  I look forward to them, and they are always startling.  Also, some of my other scattered hellebores are starting to bloom as well.

Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years shows just how very consistent my very-early red tulips like to be, marching in a straight, red line down the years.  The crocuses dance around near them, but not as straight.  And the hellebores dance around more than that.  But the red tulips hold firm.  Very-end-of-March/very-beginning-of-April, that is their time.

Looking back 2-4 weeks and 2-4 years the march of the red tulips continues, while my white hellebores continue to get buried in snow.  There’s a hint here of coming grape hyacinth, and blossoms on the earliest trees.

…This week my garden is marching itself forward.  The red tulips are the vanguard.  There are lots more to come.
