Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2024 week 30

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2024 week 30

See Previous | See Next Well, my hens-and-chicks are flowering in their crazy, alien-flower sort of way.  And also the rest of my garden seems like it’s coming back to its pretty, green self.  (There was a crazy deluge last week I might have to thank for that.) Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years emphasizes that this is summertime, and there are lots of different pretty flowers that might show up in the summertime. Looking back 2-4 weeks and…

SSCS 02: Installment 31 of 32

How to Catch Flying Pigs, and Sea Monsters This is Installment 31 of this year’s SSCS. If you want to start at the beginning of ‘How to Catch Flying Pigs, and Sea Monsters’, go here! If you want to know what the heck an SSCS is, go here! Previously… The First Hum stretched and stretched, and somehow the waves seemed to move slower, and slower, as though their song was asking the sea itself to pause.  Then gran-Tom nodded, and…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2024 week 29

See Previous | See Next My garden is still feeling somewhat ragged from The Time of the Drought, but there are still a few pretty flowers here and there (especially in the pots on my deck). Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years recalls the time of pretty lilies, and suggests now should be when the liatris start blooming.  …The liatris are not ready for blooming at this time… Looking back 2-4 weeks and 2-4 years does agree now is…

fly-by-posting: 2024/07/18 (w/pics)

I got a treat this evening! I went on a walk and saw no less than 3 separate frogs (or toads – I’m not actually sure how to tell the difference; they were in the grass by the sidewalk(s)). The littlest one especially was so cute! hiding next to a fake rock by the play-ground set. In other news, this was our local squirrel today: I think this squirrel is actually part dog, the way it likes to plop down…

Irises Roundup 2024

Irises Roundup 2024

I may have lots and lots of roses (that bloom sometimes), but did you know I also have lots and lots of irises (that bloom sometimes)!  Like roses, irises are decadently beautiful, come in so many colors and varieties, and (traditionally) smell heavenly.  (Also like roses, many of the newer, frillier varieties don’t have very much scent, but so it goes.) The season for irises is shorter than for roses, and also earlier, which means that all of my irises…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2024 week 28

See Previous | See Next Well, thing have been hot and dry, and I was gone for a bit so my garden got really dry.  Even still, it’s got some pretty corners to show off here and there.  The chokecherries are ripening and the Queen Anne’s lace will always find a way. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years shows off a lot of lilies (that would like me to water them now, please), but agrees that yes this is…

By the time she did realize it, it was too late; one of gran-Tom’s tentacles was…
