Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2024 week 44

See Previous | See Next This week we’ve gotten some real fall weather, including a frost! (briefly)  We’re definitely in full autumn-mode now. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years, one-up’s the frost with actual snow, which is something I haven’t quite seen in my garden yet this year.  But otherwise, there seems to be agreement that this is the time for some flashy fall foliage. Looking back 2-4 weeks and 2-4 years concurs on the foliage (with also some…

Some Thoughts and Offerings regarding Ghost Stories

Some Thoughts and Offerings regarding Ghost Stories

I don’t really believe in ghosts.  Or, more accurately, I think I believe that if ghosts exist, they do so in a way that’s just not relevant to me, that our worlds are completely separate, and that theirs does not affect mine.  I’m pretty sure that’s what I believe. It can still be fun to indulge in a good ghost story on occasion.  Especially around Halloween. Ghosts, and ghost stories, I think, have a way of connecting us very deeply…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2024 week 43

See Previous | See Next This week I’ve still got a few flowers blooming as we are (probably) poised right on the edge of our first cold snap. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years, agrees this is a time for fall flowers, but probably a touch of snow soon. Looking back 2-4 weeks and 2-4 years shows off the transition time, from flowers, to snow and bald seed puffs. …This week my garden is filled with autumn sunshine.

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2024 week 42

See Previous | See Next This week we’ve had more moisture and it feels like fall and it’s lovely.  And, I’ve got three rose bushes trying to bloom plus one that did! (April Moon) Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years, is only showing fall colors now, though still a range of possible fall flowers. Looking back 2-4 weeks and 2-4 years shows off some fall colors that were a bit more vivid than this year, but still good company….

Some Favorite Things

Today I need to write something positive, just cuz.  So, here’s a blog post about some random ‘favorites’ of mine…with certain follow-ups. First up: Favorite Colors Yes, kindergarten is over thirty years behind me, and yet I am still going to tell you about my favorite colors.  I really, really like colors, okay?  …Which means I can’t possibly have a favorite.  But some colors I adore are: So, what’s more wonderful than gorgeous colors?  Gorgeous color-combinations.  A single, flat color…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2024 week 41

See Previous | See Next This week the garden is looking a lot more like it’s fall, though with a few pretty flowers sticking around. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years, makes me miss the sunflowers that weren’t this year, but also look forward to the spooky weather to come. Looking back 2-4 weeks and 2-4 years shows this is the season when the foliage pictures are starting to take over from the flowers, and also gives the first…

When you’ve got a sick kid, the job of the parent is the push any sort of real food that they’ll willingly eat like it’s crack. (bagels here today) Note, if they’re still pretty little, the other job is to watch the same Disney movie 3-4 times in one day. (Tangled, back in the day, and so glad Frozen hadn’t come out yet at that point)

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2024 week 40

See Previous | See Next As we advance into October, we have reached now the glory days of marigolds and ornamental kale.  Otherwise, with the combination of warm weather and shortening days, some leaves are turning for fall while others continue to resist. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years, reminds us that fall flowers can come in just about every color, and that if we’re lucky we’ll get fall foliages in nearly every color too. Looking back 2-4 weeks…
