Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 48

See Previous | See Next Well, there’s still snow on the ground, though things are getting soggy and drippy.  Catching my garden just when the sun is coming through the scraggle can be pretty, but mostly we’re at the stage of ‘Ah, why didn’t I properly tidy this mess (back garden) before it got snow all over it?!’ Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years gives a strong reminder of how quickly things can dry back up into a brown…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 47

See Previous | See Next Well, here’s that snow everything was hinting at.  We got a good six inches this week!  The next question is always, of course, how long will it last?  Colorado winters are very dry and, lately at least, only intermittent about staying below freezing.  Never-the-less, my front garden is so shady I’d say there’s even odds I won’t be seeing the ground there again until the spring.  (But yay! I just managed to get it trimmed…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 46

See Previous | See Next It’s so dark out so early!  No longer being on Daylight Savings Time means I don’t get to see my garden as much when I come home from work.  Never-the-less, it’s still there, and a few plants are even managing to add a little bit more fall color as the weather thinks about turning properly cold. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years is kind of a mish-mash, with general agreement that brown-ness trends will…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 45

See Previous | See Next Well, we have definitely now entered the brown phase of Colorado Front-range fall/winter.  I almost said ‘the everlasting brown phase’, but of course this whole post-series puts the lie to that.  We have come to the time of year, though, when a long look at the landscape reminds you that this is the next thing to a desert, and the bits of beauty hiding out in the garden require, usually, a rather close eye. Looking…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 44

See Previous | See Next This week warmed up again a little bit and the snow of last week all melted.  We had a brief window of that muddy, warm, melty time when the breeze can almost fool you that it’s actually spring, but it’s past now and everything is less green than before, rather than more.  The foliage that hadn’t turned its fall colors yet seems to now be going straight from green to brown. Looking back 1-2 weeks…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 43

See Previous | See Next This week the snow has arrived! at least for a brief visit, along with the cold that didn’t seem quite real last week.  We got enough to blanket things, but the temperature’s rising already, so we’ll see what next week brings. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years still has suggestions of flowers, along with pretty autumn colors for the barberry bush that still haven’t quite shown up yet this year.  Half the trees and…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 42

See Previous | See Next This week the foliage on the trees has turned beautifully golden so that my garden feels filled up with sunlight.  We finally got our Halloween decorations out, and all of the leaves falling and filling up my driveway have made a great mulch for tucking in my roses (provided they don’t all blow away in the next wind storm). Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years I’m a little surprised to see how many photos…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 41

See Previous | See Next This week things definitely feel and look like fall, even though the days have still been pretty warm.  I’ve been neglecting my planter-box flowers, but the snapdragons continue blooming prettily regardless, undaunted. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years shows this is definitely the time of year when the echinacea, whose flowers have been turning so scraggly brown, make a fall-foliage comeback with pretty, yellow leaves that offset the brown stems and seed heads so…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 40

See Previous | See Next This week was pear-picking week (for a pear-picking hour; there were disconcertingly few pears this year), as fall proceeds apace.  As promised, I do have one rose to show off, which the squirrel has mysteriously decided to leave unmolested.  Viking Queen can be a bit floppy (for me anyway), but her roses are always so lovely, especially these late season ones. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years shows last year’s Viking Queen, as well…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 39

See Previous | See Next This week my one, shy cyclamen is blooming while most of everything else not in planter boxes is headed to seed – very October-y. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years has a note or two about late re-blooming roses, which I might get to follow-up again this year, depending on whether the last bud gets eaten by the squirrel or not. Looking back 2-4 weeks and 2-4 years there’s also a hint about snow…
