Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 18

See Previous | See Next It’s tulips-and-apple-blossoms season and my garden is glowing!  It’s always so gratifying when the Just-plants-lots-of-tulips-and-keeps-planting-tulips strategy pays off, as it definitely has this year.  Last year was nope for tulips, but this year they’re back.  Yay! Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years is a good reminder that spring color really does show up pretty suddenly, but will hopefully keep going for a few more weeks, with other flowers too, before we hit a lull….

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 17

See Previous | See Next My garden is starting to be painted with spring colors this week!  I’ve got tulips starting in front.  The wild plum bushes are just starting to bloom.  And my pretty, pretty pasque flower is showing its soft, feathery face. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years promises more blooming branches to come and yet more color from the tulips. Looking back 2-4 weeks and 2-4 years, (despite a sad data-gap) promises pretty lilacs soon too….

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 16

See Previous | See Next Well, we got more snow this week so that I woke up and looked outside and everything looked like it had been frosted with powdered sugar.  It was cool enough and enough snow to hang around for a day or so and provide some proper moisture, so everything was beautiful, beautiful white and green.  The winter brown has finally been chased away, and the tulips are really gearing themselves up to go. Looking back 1-2…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 15

See Previous | See Next Yay.  We had some blessed rain and snow this week, and that really made things perk up lovely.  For a little bit on Saturday, the grass had snow shadows in the shapes of the trees, and sprinkled snow lay on the plum branches like white blossoms. And the daffodils are here! random yellow dots here and there and everywhere!  I love bulb flowers. I also love my pretty, pretty hellebores, and so I couldn’t resist…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 14

See Previous | See Next All the green shoots coming up in my garden!  Iris leaves and tulip shoots and daffodils!  My red lentin roses are always so nice and healthy, but a lot more of my garden is still so dry that the other hellebores are struggling.  But, that’s not stopping everything else, and this year SO many tulips (maybe) – if I can just get them water. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years say that buds on…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 13

See Previous | See Next I’ve got flowers!  The crocuses and the crazy red alien tulips actually decided to show up at the same time.  (These were surprise tulips planted by the previous owners.  As you can see, they bloom very early, but also, in the bright sun, they open almost flat, quite unlike tulips as I previously understood them.) Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years is quite the advertisement for the consistency of these tulips. Otherwise, it suggests…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 12

See Previous | See Next Last week I complained about the lack of snow, so this week we did get a tiny dusting, which tried (valiantly) and failed to make last year’s garden scruff look elegant and white-edged.  Once it disappeared the garden was back to looking brown from a distance, but showing creeping green and more and more tulip shoots in the close-ups. (Update:  Well, Sunday night it really did snow (see inset), much more effectively (~4 inches?) and…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 11

See Previous | See Next This week the state of my garden has mostly tended toward windy and dry. Though March is historically the snowiest month in Colorado, we’ve had very little so far, with only a bare smidge of rain sprinkled on top of that. Never-the-less, the tulips and the hellebore buds press their quiet way upward through the leaf litter. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years, suggests that crocuses too may soon be coming our way. Looking…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 10

See Previous | See Next This week there is less and less ice in my front garden, revealing the patiently waiting greenery of creepers underneath. And the dry brown in the back garden is showing the new green of young iris leaves if you poke beneath last year’s old, withered ones. Looking back 1-2 weeks and 1-2 years, we do seem to be balanced now between snow and ice, and new spring buds poking their way up, with either iris…

Weekly Garden Snapshot: 2023 week 9

See Previous | See Next As ever, early spring in Colorado is very brown, and while that squirrel sitting in that fence/bush/hedge thing is cute, that whole brown-and-barren ambiance (often minus the cute) is very much what my whole garden looks like right now (and for large swaths of the year). But, if you look closely, there are green things getting ready to poke their heads up – or in the case of these hens-and-chicks, emerge directly out from under…
